Lady Helen Taylor has long occupied a rare place in royal fashion close enough to the spotlight to command attention.
Once an Armani muse, she has spent decades cultivating a quietly confident style that feels worlds away from the formal coat dresses and precise tailoring often associated with the royal wardrobe.
It is perhaps why, even when attending weddings and other grand royal occasions, Lady Helen has consistently managed to make an impression without appearing to try too hard.
On 18 July 1992, Lady Helen Windsor, as she was then known, married art dealer Timothy Taylor at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, wearing a bespoke Catherine Walker gown.
The occasion brought together some of the most recognisable members of the Royal Family, including Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, before the celebrations continued at her parents’ country home in Oxfordshire.
For the ceremony, royal tradition called for a British designer, but Lady Helen’s relationship with Giorgio Armani was already firmly established.
The Italian designer personally selected the outfit she wore when leaving for her honeymoon, while also creating a look for her mother, the Duchess of Kent.
Armani would remain an important part of Lady Helen’s fashion story for years.
Looking back on her style in her twenties, she once admitted that she had felt her wardrobe had become overly committed to one particular look – even joking about her collection of puffball skirts.
That began to change after Susannah Constantine, then working in public relations, invited her to the opening of Emporio Armani’s first London store and offered her the opportunity to select a suit for the occasion.
Lady Helen soon became an Armani ambassador and a familiar face alongside the designer at fashion shows around the world, earning a place among the best-connected figures in British fashion.
Her wardrobe has since extended far beyond Armani. From Erdem to Amanda Wakeley, Lady Helen has repeatedly turned to designers capable of complementing her individual style rather than overshadowing it.
