A Minnesota manufacturer is voluntarily recalling around 1.7 million pounds of sugar products due to a potential wheat kernel contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced.
United Sugar Producers and Refiners of Minneapolis started the recall last month, and the FDA this week categorised it as a Class II recall.
This indicates that consumption of the affected product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” though the probability of serious harm is remote.
Which products are affected
The recall covers light brown and powdered sugar sold under the United, Good & Gather, and Crystal Sugar brands. Good & Gather is a product line that can be purchased only at Target stores and belongs to Target.
Among those who will need to check their packages are those who have bought 50-pound bags of United Light Brown Sugar, 2-pound bags of Good & Gather Light Brown Sugar, 50-pound bags of United 6X Powdered Sugar, 25-pound bags of Crystal Sugar Powdered Sugar, and 2-pound bags of Good & Gather Powdered Sugar.
All batch numbers of affected products are MHD26223 through MHD26230, depending on the type of product one has.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, all this sugar had been distributed in eight states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
Why it matters
Wheat is one of the nine major food allergies listed by the FDA. Consumers with wheat allergies or sensitivities should double-check their batch numbers and avoid consuming the products. The FDA hasn’t listed specific retailers that sold the sugar.
