Miley Cyrus is missing from the MTV VMAs’ planned Dolly Parton tribute, and the reported reasons are adding a twist to the lineup.
Kacey Musgraves is set to lead Sunday’s tribute to the country legend, despite Parton’s famously close bond with her goddaughter Miley.
Now anonymous sources speaking to Rob Shuttersay the decision may come down to a mix of emotion, production priorities and audience appeal.
“Dolly wasn’t just an icon to Miley — she was family,” a music insider noted. “There was concern that asking Miley to turn that grief into a television moment so soon would be incredibly emotional. This isn’t just another tribute for her.”
But another source claims Cyrus was never formally invited.
“Miley comes with enormous emotion, history and attention,” the insider said. “The second she walks onto that stage, the tribute becomes the Miley moment. Producers wanted the focus firmly on Dolly. Kacey is easier — she can deliver a beautiful performance without overshadowing the tribute itself.”
The report also points to the VMAs’ potential interest in attracting country music viewers.
“MTV wants country fans watching,” another source added. “Kacey gives them credibility with that audience. Miley is a superstar, but Kacey delivers the traditional country viewer they want.”
Still, Cyrus’ absence may stand out to viewers familiar with her long history of performing alongside Parton.
“Everybody expected Miley,” shared the source. “That’s what makes her absence the story.”
MTV has not publicly confirmed the reported reasons behind the tribute lineup.
