MIT has been named the number one in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. This marks the first time the Institute has claimed the top spot in its annual Best Colleges rankings.
MIT secured the top spot in the 2027 News ranking due to its unparalleled strength in STEM fields, especially in undergraduate engineering, computer science, and economics, with several first-place finishes across specialty programs.
Its business school named MIT Sloan School of Management, was also ranked No. 2, while it earned first place for undergraduate research and third for best value. This broad excellence across disciplines pushed MIT past rivals like Princeton, Harvard, and Stanford for the first time.
The ranking released on Tuesday, September 22, revealed that MIT placed first in five specialties including aerospace, chemical, electrical, materials, and mechanical engineering. In computer science, it tied with Carnegie Mellon for first in biocomputing, computer systems, and theory, and placed second in artificial intelligence and data analytics.
The Boston Globe reports that New England schools made an appearance among the top rankings as well. Harvard ranked third for the fourth year in a row, followed by Yale at fourth place. Dartmouth tied for 12th, and Brown tied for 16th. The best public school in New England is UMass Amherst. Williams College ranked number one once more in the liberal arts ranking.
Georgia Tech, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and Caltech are some other engineering schools among the top five. Carnegie Mellon and Stanford tied with MIT at number one in computer science, along with UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech, Princeton, and the University of Illinois.
