The FBI is reducing its personnel in Tucson and shifting its command post to Phoenix in the Nancy Guthrie abduction case.
The operational shift is not an indication that the case is winding down or that investigators are giving up. It means that the FBI will maintain agents in Tucson and continue partnering with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, but many investigators are returning to Phoenix, where the bureau has its largest Arizona office.
The officers reinvestigated the Guthrie’s property and plan to open the home to Guthrie’s family, no longer treating it as a sealed crime scene. The investigators are now focusing more on in-depth investigation, including reviewing Walmart sales receipts and security footage, untangling mixed DNA samples found inside the home, and parsing around 1,500 tips received since Savannah Guthrie offered a $1 million reward.
Despite the massive response and two ransom notes, authorities confirmed no suspect has been identified. The number of tips has tapered off after the initial surge following the reward announcement.
Guthrie was abducted from her Tucson home in the early hours of February 1 by an unknown suspect. Authorities have urged anyone with information to call 911, the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI, or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.
