A self-styled investigator has reignited speculation about Tommaso Cioni, the son-in-law of kidnapped 80-year-old Nancy Guthrie, despite authorities clearing him of any involvement in the case.
Jonathan Lee Riches, who has been following the story in Tucson, showed an older video where the former NewsNation reporter, Ashleigh Banfield, claimed that the police had identified Cioni as the “prime suspect” in the missing case. The statement from Banfield was made prior to the official announcement by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department that no Guthrie family members were suspects.
Riches shared on X (formerly Twitter), raising questions: “Does an innocent person have their car seized for over a month, and their house searched with Luminol testing performed?”
He also suggested that Cioni should sue the Sheriff’s Department if the claims were untrue.
Cioni is married to Annie Guthrie, who happens to be the daughter of Nancy and sister to Savannah Guthrie, who hosts the TODAY Show. The two had seen Nancy just before she disappeared in February. It is said that they dropped her off the evening before her disappearance.
It is confirmed by authorities that the car belonging to Cioni was taken away for forensic tests, as Nancy was thought to have been travelling in it before her abduction. Apparently, there was a delay in getting the car back as it had to be reconstructed.
Meanwhile, Nancy’s longtime friend Lauren Serpa has also requested privacy for the family. She wrote online: “This has been a long six months for them. They have a right to be able to live their lives normally without the feeling of being stalked and watched all the time.”
The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapping continues, with authorities having hit several dead ends since she was reported missing on February 1.
