A flood watch remains in effect for all of New Mexico as remnants of Hurricane Polo and Tropical Storm Odalys funnel unprecedented moisture into the state, prompting warnings of flash flooding through midweek.
The National Weather Service says saturated ground from last week’s storms means even modest rainfall can cause dangerous runoff.
The flood watch covers the entire state through Tuesday night, September 29, with northern and central areas including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and the Rio Grande Valley, most at risk for excessive runoff.
Creeks, streams, and low-water crossings can overflow, and some roads may become impassable. Rain totals are projected at 1 to 4 inches, depending on where the heaviest bands set up.
Showers started overnight in the northwest and will become more scattered to widespread. The flooding threat peaks through Wednesday, September 30, before drier air arrives Thursday, October 1.
Governor-appointed officials are urging residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to monitor local alerts.
Meteorologists stress that burn scars are already-saturated surfaces, heightening the risk. Emergency crews are prepositioned across the state, and residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive warnings. The flood watch may be extended or upgraded to warnings as conditions evolve.
