An extremely dangerous tornado tore through parts of northeast Wisconsin on Monday, July 27, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a particularly dangerous tornado warning.
Considering the forecast, NWS has issued the second highest level of alert.
The tornado affected parts of Appleton and Menasha, then moved to Lake Winnebago and dissipated on water. The tornado lasted at least 20 minutes, according to the NWS. The spotters found the thunderstorm that can cause tornadoes at Rosendale and Ripon, traveling south at 30 mph.
Over 20,000 customers have no electricity in Outagamie County, in which Appleton is mainly situated, along with over 12,000 customers in neighboring Winnebago County, as per PowerOutage.us. The whole town of Menasha could lose power, according to Menasha Utilities.
There are chances that the storm may travel south across eastern Wisconsin. For large part of the Great Lakes and Ohio, a level 3 of 5 risk of severe thunderstorms warning has been in effect. Large hail and additional isolated tornadoes also remain possible.
There was also a tornado warning issued for the northern portion of Fond du Lac and Dodge County, ending at 1:45 p.m. There was also a confirmation of hail ranging from two inches in size.
Over 189,000 homes had no power supply in Illinois and Wisconsin because of these storms.
