More leaks from OpenAI’s entry into the hardware market has emerged, with reports suggesting the company’s first AI-powered smart speaker carrying a price tag between $300 and $400.
As reported by Bloomberg, the device is a “physical manifestation” of ChatGPT, will be shaped like a doughnut and roughly the size of a hockey puck.
Its design is made considering the accessibility to carry it around their home and place in different locations such as beside tables or kitchen counters.
This particular device is built in collaboration with LoveFrom, a design firm created by Jony Ive, who was formerly the chief design officer at Apple, and will have a high-end metal casing, along with moving components that will move independently to show when it is reacting or communicating with people.
The battery-driven gadget will work like the voice mode of ChatGPT on mobiles, although it will have more sophisticated mechanisms than ChatGPT for human-like interaction capabilities.
With a price tag of $300 to $400, the device would be positioned significantly above most smart home speakers currently on the market. The competitors, including Amazon’s Echo lineup, are available from $40 to $240, while Apple’s HomePod starts at around $300.
This venture into the hardware space is OpenAI’s strategic attempt to ensure that ChatGPT becomes a part of people’s daily routines. But the road will not be easy because smart speakers have never been profitable, and entering a market ruled by Amazon, Google, and Apple may not be very easy.
The smart speaker is likely to be one of the “family of products” offered by OpenAI. The product is anticipated to launch in 2027.
