Pakistan and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening counterterrorism cooperation, pledging to jointly confront the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other terrorist outfits threatening the safety of their citizens and regional stability.
The two nations made the pledge during the fourth US-Pakistan Counterterrorism Dialogue held on Tuesday in Washington, the Foreign Office said in a statement on Wednesday.
US Coordinator for Counterterrorism Ambassador Gregory LoGerfo and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Special Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir led the dialogue, it added.
During the dialogue, Islamabad and Washington pledged united action against terrorist groups, including banned Daesh (ISIS-K), al-Qaida (AQ), the TTP, and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its affiliates.
“The two governments committed to ensuring their counterterrorism collaboration to keep both of their nations safe and secure, and as part of an enduring vision of regional peace, prosperity, and stability,” the FO said.
The two sides underscored shared interests in the counterterrorism partnership and the two countries’ determination to confront terrorism.
Delegations also exchanged views on the current threat environment, explored avenues to enhance collaboration, and discussed steps to strengthen border security and disrupt terrorist facilitation networks.
Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in terrorist activities, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.
Islamabad has consistently maintained that India supports militant groups operating from Afghan territory to carry out attacks inside Pakistan.
It has also repeatedly called on the Afghan Taliban-led administration to take effective action against terrorist organisations using Afghan soil to launch cross-border attacks.
After Islamabad said Kabul failed to fulfil its responsibility, it launched Operation Ghazab lil-Haq in February this year in response to cross-border militant attacks from Afghanistan.
Last month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged the nation to unite against terrorism, asserting that India’s involvement in terrorist activities inside Pakistan was “absolutely clear”.
Addressing participants at the Balochistan National Workshop in Islamabad on July 17, the premier said India-sponsored terrorism had martyred more than 90,000 Pakistanis.
