Queen Margrethe has been admitted to hospital after feeling unwell, with doctors treating a new blood clot in her hip region and mild dehydration.
The 86-year-old former Danish monarch was admitted to Rigshospitalet on Sunday, September 6, where she is expected to remain for the coming week for observation and treatment.
The Danish Royal House said the Queen is “in good spirits” and, considering the circumstances, is doing well.
Her hospitalisation means Margrethe will no longer be able to attend the funeral of her close relative and friend, King Harald V of Norway, in Oslo on Wednesday.
King Harald, who died aged 89 on August 28 after 35 years on the Norwegian throne, will be laid to rest following a funeral service at Oslo Cathedral on September 9.
Margrethe and Harald were second cousins, sharing King Frederik VIII of Denmark as a great-grandfather, and the pair were also known to have maintained a close personal friendship.
She was admitted to Rigshospitalet in May after experiencing heart-related symptoms and underwent balloon angioplasty on a coronary artery.
Later that month, she was treated for a blood collection in the hip area following an earlier fall and was discharged on May 29, with doctors advising her to take things easy while she recovered.
