King Charles has been facing a major issue since the day he ascended to the throne and it seems like that the problem is only growing, and the solution is not very-well liked.
The working royal members had begun shrinking just before the death of Queen Elizabeth II, especially with the exit of Prince Harry and Meghan – who were anticipated to be key players in not just Charles’s reign but also Prince William.
Then the shame of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson caused a massive turmoil and uncertainty over Beatrice and Eugenie. Moreover, many of the working members are over 70s with an exception of the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.
According to a royal expert, the latest addition to the line of succession – Princess Eugenie’s daughter born earlier this week – had reignited concerns for the institution.
Prince William is the first in line to the throne followed by Prince George and his siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. It is then followed by a major “gap” representing a “striking vulnerability at the heart of the institution”.
The Waleses may be the future of the royal family but the 11 intervening positions are filled by royals who have either stepped back from or never taken on formal roles within the monarchy, according to Richard Fitzwilliams.
He told GB News that the Waleses are the future of the monarchy but it means that there will be a prolonged period where working ranks remain thin, as the “institution faces a notable shortfall in active successors”.
“If you look at the situation, it causes considerable concern,” he said. “Whether the mechanisms of changing it would be put into operation is unclear.”
He noted, “I don’t think anyone would look at the line of succession after the Waleses and feel at ease.”
