Saudi Arabia has unveiled the first cars from its homegrown automotive brand Ceer as the oil-rich kingdom tries to build an entirely new industry at home.
And the first two cars don’t exactly play it safe.
The premium electric sedan and SUV, called EXOBOT, have a futuristic design that can be compared with vehicles from the science-fiction movie Tron.
Both come with gullwing doors that open upwards, while Ceer has removed the usual pillars between the front and rear doors.
The two EVs are expected to go on sale in Saudi Arabia in early 2027.
Ceer was created in 2022 as a joint venture between Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn.
Despite being a Saudi brand, some big international names are involved.
Foxconn developed the cars’ electrical architecture, while BMW provided engineering support. Suppliers from the US, Germany, South Korea and China have also established factories in Saudi Arabia.
The cars will be built at Ceer’s manufacturing complex in King Abdullah Economic City.
EXOBOT is only the beginning as the Saudi automaker plans to introduce another five models between 2028 and 2030 before gradually expanding into other Middle Eastern and North African markets.
Interestingly, the company is no longer betting everything on electric cars.
Its future lineup will also include plug-in hybrids and conventional combustion-engine vehicles as it responds to changing demand.
