
As the firefighters continue to battle the largest wildfire near the Sizewell nuclear power plant in Dunwich Heath, the fears have grown that the blaze might reach the facility.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service called this incident one of the largest and most difficult challenges they have faced. Around 112 firefighters and 18 fire engines were trying to contain the blaze, which is expected to keep burning for two more days.
The Sizewell B Nuclear Plant (EDF) is approximately five miles from the location of the fire; however, as of yesterday evening, neither the fire nor its smoke was impacting the operation of Sizewell B. According to both Suffolk County Fire Department and EDF, the current fire is expected to impact neither Sizewell B nor Sizewell C, as the wind was blowing in opposite directions.
However, weather forecasting indicates the wind will eventually turn north, potentially allowing the fires to move closer to the two facilities depending upon whether or when they are extinguished.
Now scientists have revealed possible scenarios of what could happen if the fire reaches the facility.
According to Science Media Center, scientists stated that while the two reactors themselves do not appear defenseless against wildfires, due to their design and placement. Both reactors sit on an industrial plot surrounded by roads that could serve as fire breaks.
Additionally, the two reactors were designed to withstand a variety of potential hazards including fires. In fact, Sizewell B received its last fire safety inspection from the Office for Nuclear Regulation in March 2024. Even if the fire does present a hazard to either reactor, each unit can be safely shut down as a precautionary measure.
According to one nuclear engineer, even if the fire reaches the reactor itself, the greatest practical concern isn’t having the flames damage or destroy the equipment in the reactor. Instead, he believes the greatest concern is having smoke entering the plant’s air filtration systems, thus clogging these filters.
This would create difficulties in maintaining proper temperature levels for some of the support systems that surround the reactor. While this would not pose a direct threat to the reactor itself, it may necessitate shutting off power production temporarily until it is safe to allow workers back inside.
At present, EDF states that they are constantly monitoring the situation as it develops.
