The political world is abuzz with speculations after the revelation that Senator Mirch McConnell’s office has refused to verify whether the Kentucky Republican personally signed a recent letter to President Donald Trump or if his signature was produced via autopen.
The letter, dated July 28, asks President Trump to declare a major disaster in Kentucky as a result of flooding. Although signed by McConnell along with Kentucky’s full congressional delegation, McConnell’s staff, under the leadership of Chief of Staff Terry Carmack, have refused to comment on whether the letter is authentic. This follows a period when the 84-year-old senator was admitted to the hospital on June 14.
His office has submitted “proof of life” photos and confirmed that he is recovering from a fall and mild pneumonia.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has publicly questioned McConnell’s capacity to serve, stating on his podcast: “Mitch McConnell cares about his legacy and he’s ruining it.”
This is especially tricky considering the past claims by President Trump and other officials regarding the use of the autopen by former President Joe Biden.
As there are no live appearances from the Senator and his SUVs with Capitol Police insignia outside his hospital, all this leads to conspiracy theories on the internet, where people are demanding proof of his existence or his resignation. The long absence of the senator leads to a credibility problem since nobody knows whether he can perform his job responsibilities.
