Shailene Woodley’s Emmys look may have split the internet, but her stylist Karla Welch isn’t letting the harshest reactions slide.
Woodley hit the 2026 Emmys in a head-turning Balenciaga Fall/Winter 2026 haute couture ensemble featuring oversized sequined trousers, a plunging blue tank top and maroon leather gloves stretching above her elbows.
A multicolored statement necklace and slicked-back hair completed the look.
And, naturally, the internet had thoughts.
“Did she lose a bet?” one user wrote on X, while another bluntly claimed, “Her stylist hates her.”
Welch responded to the backlash on Threads September 15, making it clear that fashion criticism is one thing—being cruel is another.
“Love or hate something fine but it’s an opinion and it can even be a conversation” Welch wrote on Threads September 15, “but being super rude and mean and taking glee from it, well that says a lot more about the mouths it’s coming from.”
Not everyone was ready to declare the look a fashion disaster. One person pushed back against the criticism in Welch’s comments, writing, “She looked amazing!”
Woodley also switched things up for Disney’s after-party at Vibiana in Los Angeles, trading her plunging tank for a T-shirt repping the 1986 film Home of the Brave.
But here’s the thing: the Fault in Our Starsactress had already walked into the Emmys as a winner.
She took home her first Emmy for Guest Actress in a Drama Series at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sept. 6 for Paradise.
“I’m just stoked,” Woodley told E! News.“I just feel so lucky. I love what I do, and I never take it for granted.”
“Every single time I get to walk onto a film set, it feels like a brand new opportunity with a new scope of things to learn and people to play off of and experiences to be had,” she continued.
“I love being a storyteller.”
