A strong 6.7 magnitude has struck southern Peru’s Ayacucho region on Thursday, August 20, leaving buildings damaged, cutting off power.
According to local media reports, the officials have confirmed the the earthquake has left three people dead and several injured.
The seismic activity was reported near the small settlement of Aniso in the southern Ayacucho region on Thursday, August 20, accordind to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake hit at around 1 p.m. local time (18:00 GMT) at a depth of 62 miles (100km), around 19 miles (31km) north-west of Aniso, in a fairly isolated region.
In 2007, a strong 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck in a province of the Ica region, the southern coast of Peru, claimed 600 lives.
Peru’s defence minister Rafel Belaunde has updated on the seismic activity that jolted the Ayacucho region, saying 22 homes and six schools were damaged, per Peruvian newspaper El Comercio.
The seismic events are common in Peru, which is situated on the fault line where the Nazca and South American plates converge.
The earthquake that struck the South American country of Peru’s Ayacucho region on Thursday was the latest strong seismic event over the past few months.
It followed deadly quakes that struck Colombia and Venezuela.
