Taylor Swift is giving fans a closer look at the intricate wordplay behind her song I Knew You, I Knew You.
Reflecting on the hidden imagery, the 14-time Grammy winner revealed that some of its most striking lines were deliberately written with multiple meanings.
Speaking at the iHeart Radio Country Party, the Blank Spacehitmaker praised fans for paying close attention to the lyrics.
“I love that the lyrics of this song are being delved into by the fans,” she stated, adding that the song was designed to reward listeners who look beyond its surface meaning.
The Eras Tour superstar explained that when writing a song with multiple themes, she tries to compress an entire story into just a few lines, “there are a lot of lyrics that have like more than one meaning to them.”
One of the clearest examples, she said, comes in the song’s opening line, “The first line in the song ‘I Knew You through the dace of the blades of the grass in summer’ and the double meaning of that is first of all there are DACE spelled D-A-C-E which if you also wanted to think about it as D-A-Y-S you could perceive it as that, but I thought of it as a dace of a child where you look back and see a blurry, beautiful memory that’s kinda blurry in the edges.”
The Cruel Summerchart-topper explained that the image of grass is connected to childhood, imagination and the perspective of a child looking back on a memory that has become blurred around the edges.
She also pointed to another layer in the imagery: toys. Because toys are small and close to the ground, the blades of summer grass can appear enormous from their perspective.
The 36-year-old then explained the significance of another lyric, “‘parachutes for the free fall of being younger’ there’s a literal army of parachutes in Toy Story, as well as symbolically someone who’s trying to helps you grow up, and helps your landings be softer and things like that.”
For the songwriter, those multiple interpretations are part of what makes the process exciting. Rather than spelling out one definitive meaning, she allows listeners to discover connections of their own.
As Swifties understood the assignment, Taylor made sure to give credit to the fans who have taken the time to dissect those details
“So, thanks to the fans who actually cared about the lyrics, you guys are the best!” she praised them.
