Cost is emerging as a main contributing factor that is driving U.S. gamers to cancel their online subscriptions to major gaming consoles.
More than 40% of U.S. gamers have recently cancelled subscriptions to services like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus Essential, and Nintendo Switch Online, according to recent data released by Circana, a portal that tracks video game consumer data.
Out of all the groups surveyed, the U.S. gamers who have a subscription to Nintendo Switch reported the highest level of cost-related pressure.
Alf of those subscribers who cancelled Nintendo Switch Online said they were satisfied with the service but couldn’t bear the brunt of the rising costs.
And the numbers have climbed well above the previously reported 40%.
While for Xbox Game Pass Essential and PlayStation Plus Essential, the share of gamers who complained of rising costs has increased to 40%.
The gaming analyst and Circana director Mat Piscatella cautioned that the findings do not show the overall number of cancellations has increased.
Instead, the survey highlighted the reasons provided by consumers who have already dropped their subscriptions.
The findings portray a stark scenario as the key console manufacturers face mounting pressure to find a middle ground between revenue generation and affordability.
In April, Microsoft slashed the price of its highest Game Pass category but removed day-one access to new Call of Duty releases.
While Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all have raised console prices during 2026, citing rising fluctuating market trends.
