A possible burial site of Viking ruler Ragnar Lothbrok’s son Ubbe has been identified. It is believed he died over 1100 years ago in Devon (England) in the aftermath of one of the greatest battles ever fought by an Anglo-Saxon force against a large Viking force.

The archaeological investigation is centered upon a large burial mound near Castle Hill in Devon.

According to researchers, this burial mound could possibly represent “Ubbe’s Mound” or Ubbelawe, a name given by a 12th-century chronicler to describe the burial place of the Viking Commander who was said to have led the forces which took part in the Battle of Cynuit (fought in 878).

Although little is known about this battle due to a lack of written records from the time, what is certain is that an Anglo-Saxon army led by King Alfred attacked the Viking forces at dawn and forced the Viking army into retreat. In addition to their heavy losses, the Viking forces lost control of their famous Raven Banner.

Researchers believe that Castle Hill itself could have been the site where the Battle of Cynuit occurred. Castle Hill is an Iron Age hill fort located in North Devon.

There is a large burial mound approximately 12 meters wide and 2.5 meters high located very close to Castle Hill. Research suggests that it could be connected with the burial of the Viking Commander who was killed in battle.

A 12th century historian recorded that following the death of the Viking leader Ubbe, his followers buried him under a large mound in Devon.
