Founded by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in 1961 with a view to preserving the executive mansion, the White House Historical Association has come under heavy fire for its silence on President Donald Trump’s plan to demolish the East Wing to construct a gargantuan 90,000-square-foot ballroom.
As per The Washington Post report, the White House Historical Association learned of these plans back in July 2025, long before any bulldozers arrived at the site in mid-October 2025, but did not take a stand. Rather, the organisation’s staff members took pictures of these historical rooms scheduled for demolition, including Kennedy’s office, calling it “documentation for history.”
The organisation’s CEO, Stewart McLaurin, wrote an essay on LinkedIn back in June 2025 saying that renovation projects in the White House, even those that were controversial, became integral parts of the White House history. However, historian Ed Lengel, a former association staffer, disagreed, noting that there was consultation in earlier renovation cases.
However, critics claim that the inactivity is the result of the growing relationship between the organisation and the president, who has been donating his salary to the organisation and helping with the fundraising efforts. The chairman of the organization John F.W. Rogers, an employee of Goldman Sachs, was consulted by Melania Trump during the presidential transition.
As noted by Rebecca Miller from the DC Preservation League in an interview with the Washington Post, “Jackie Kennedy founded the organisation because she thought the White House should be treated like a museum.” The complicity of the White House Historical Association in this case is out of “that spirit.”
Legal experts believe that the White House Historical Association had better chances of standing in court than the other organisations fighting for the preservation of the White House. The recent ruling of the Supreme Court on a 5-4 vote that the National Trust for Historic Preservation lacks standing to sue could serve as a sign that other groups would win.
According to the organisation, the activities are nonpartisan and “aligned with the mission” established by Kennedy, even though it discovered the demolition project at the same time as the public, according to the Post timeline.
