Emma Barnett is set to leave BBC Radio 4’s Today programme after just two years, citing that the environment “probably wasn’t an environment that suited her,” according to colleagues who said she is “better leading a programme on her own than with a team.”
She is understood to be staying at the BBC and has been in long discussions over fronting a major new current affairs podcast for BBC Sounds, with insiders saying she is “Excited to move on to her next challenge.”
Her departure also follows rumoured tensions with her co-presenter Nick Robinson as the pair reportedly went 90 days without appearing on air together amid “clashing egos.”
One senior figure warned: “There has to be a new full-time presenter now. And it needs to be someone who is going to stick around. Listeners want stability. Amol and Emma were not here very long, compared with past figures.”
Following Barnett’s exit, names tipped to play a more prominent role include BBC Europe editor Katya Adler and chief political correspondent Henry Zeffman. Political Editor Chris Mason is also tipped for a future transfer.
