Zayn Malik and Ayra Starr are giving their new-music rollout a nostalgic twist, taking fans back to the days of flip phones and text messages.
Ahead of their upcoming collaboration Heaven Baby, the singer, whose real name is Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, posted an image on her Instagram Stories, featuring an old-school Sprint mobile phone.
The phone’s screen displays a note from her saying that she and the former One Direction star had left fans a message, followed by a phone number to call.
On Wednesday, August 12, the Dusk Till Dawnhitmaker also reposted the Nigerian artist’s story on his own social media account.
Later, a fan account shared a short clip appearing to show what happened when the number was called.
On the other end, listeners could hear Ayra Starr, 24, introducing herself before the 33-year-old singer joins in with a playful, “Yo, it’s Zayn.”
The two artists then tease the new track, encouraging fans to listen to Heaven Baby and share their reactions online.
“We are excited for you to listen to Heaven Baby,” she said. “Everybody that knows me knows that I’ve been a One Direction app for the longest time. So the fact that I get to have the song with the Zayn Malik is crazy. Coming for you to your heaven, baby.”
Rather than simply posting artwork or a release announcement, Zayn and Ayra appear to be inviting fans into a small interactive experience, giving the track’s promotion a more personal feel than a conventional social-media teaser.
Additionally, the collaboration track is set to release on August 14.
