Rockstar Games’s recent update has sent GTA 6 community into a frenzy after the publisher announced that GTA 6 download codes will expire on May 8, 2027.
The update comes after Rockstar Games confirmed that physical media of Grand Theft Auto 6 will include a download code rather than a disc.
The announcement led to Sony’s decision to discontinue physical disc production starting January 2028.
According to the Rockstar Games’ support page, download codes will no longer work 170 days after the game’s November 19 launch due to “regional regulations.”
The rule is in place under Japan’s Payment Services Act, regulated by the Financial Services Agency of Japan (JFSA).
These regulations have made it mandatory for digital code sellers to maintain reserved funds in case a company goes bankrupt.
However, that rule does not apply to products with less than six months’ expiry.
The regional restrictions meant that users can only redeem and play games using codes bought in the same region as their consoles.
After the debate gets heated on social media, with GTA 6 community demanding physical media, Rockstar president Dan Houser weighs in on the debate.
In an interview last month, Houser said, “If people want that, I think companies should provide it.”
GTA 6 pre-orders are live from June 25, 2026, with official launch still on track for November 19, 2026.
