Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has crossed the $1 trillion mark for the first time, putting the chipmaker into a club that only a handful of American companies have ever reached.
And it has happened remarkably quickly.
AMD shares jumped around 9% on Monday and hit a record above $613, briefly pushing the company’s market value past $1 trillion.
Around this time last year, it was worth roughly $255 billion. Much of the excitement comes down to AI.
AMD has spent years trying to loosen Nvidia’s grip on the market for the powerful chips needed to build and run artificial intelligence systems.
It is now going beyond individual chips and selling complete AI systems, combining processors with networking equipment and other hardware.
Investors appear increasingly convinced that there is room for more than one big winner in the AI chip boom.
AMD has also been taking server CPU market share from Intel as demand grows for processors used alongside GPUs inside data centers.
The stock is now up around 185% in 2026, compared with a gain of less than 16% for the Nasdaq.
Crossing $1 trillion makes AMD only the fourth US chipmaker to reach the milestone, following Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron.
Nvidia is now worth more than $5 trillion.
