Apple has dropped a mysterious teaser just hours before one of its biggest launch events in years and it may contain a clue about a major camera upgrade coming to the new iPhone.
New Apple CEO John Ternus posted a cryptic 14-second video on Wednesday ahead of the company’s “Surprise and Shine” event.
The clip shows what appears to be the edge of an iPhone being hit by a beam of light coming through a shape that repeatedly changes size.
Apple didn’t explain what it means. But there is one obvious possibility.
The shape looks remarkably similar to a camera aperture opening and closing, adding to rumours that the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max will come with a variable-aperture main camera.
Unlike the fixed aperture used on current iPhones, a mechanical aperture could physically control how much light reaches the camera sensor.
That could give users more control over depth of field while also helping the camera adjust to different lighting conditions.
Whether that’s actually what Apple is teasing will become clear very soon.
The company is holding its annual September event at Apple Park in Cupertino at 10 a.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday.
And the camera may not even be the biggest announcement.
Apple is widely expected to unveil its first-ever foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. The foldable model is expected to open like a book and could cost more than $2,000.
The event will also be closely watched for another reason: it is Ternus’ first major product launch since succeeding Tim Cook as Apple CEO on September 1.
