King Charles may have grievances with his son Prince Harry for all the hurt he caused him in the past few years, but he remains a doting father and grandfather at heart.
The monarch finally reunited with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet last month in a meeting at Highgrove House, which Charles himself had “orchestrated”.
Even though there had been a back-and-forth between the Palace and the Sussex team about security and royal accommodation, Charles was understood to be determined that he would not miss the opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren.
It is no secret that Charles had a fondness for Prince William and Princess Catherine’s children, George, Charlotte and Louis. However, distance has not made the doting grandfather love Archie and Lilibet any less.
“The minute anyone mentions Archie and Lilibet to Charles, his whole face lights up,” a source told Closer Magazine. “He says they both remind him so much of Harry when he was a boy.”
They added that it is also “very painful” for Charles as he missed out on so many years but he is not making it a “priority” to get to know Archie and Lilibet better.
“He’s keen to build on this new peaceful dialogue [with Sussexes] and hoping it will all fall into place,” the insider noted.
Moreover, if the UK is a tricky place to make that happen, he is “willing to make the effort” and take it outside of the UK. It would be a “huge” logistical operation with many other risks attached. But he’d “much rather spend time with his grandchildren than worry about pleasing everyone else”.
