Becky G is opening up about the completely unplanned origins of her new collaboration with Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco, Te Olvido (La La), calling the whole experience surreal.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, the 29-year-old singer described her excitement at finally teaming up with Gomez.
“It’s just everything. I was trippin’. The Gomez girls, finally! She’s the sweetest. And I’ve known Benny for so long now, which is crazy.”
Becky G explained that the track came together with zero expectations attached.
“I remember the day we went into the studio, again, no intention set, just kind of like: ‘Let’s create and let’s see what happens,'” she said.
The song stuck with her in the weeks that followed, to the point where she found herself humming it involuntarily around the house.
“I feel like it was a few weeks after, the song was so stuck in my head. I literally would wake up like: ‘La, la, la la la, la, la, la, la la.’ And I’d walk around my house, and then I’d text my manager Ben, then I hit Benny, and be like: ‘OK, so what are we gonna do with this song? What’s gonna happen with the song?’ And it just continued to unfold.”
Te Olvido (La La) arrived July 31 as the second single from Blanco’s upcoming album Hermoso, out August 14, following lead single Joven y Salvaje with Bb Trickz.
The cumbia-inspired track features Becky G on the chorus, singing in Spanish about deciding whether to hold onto or let go of a relationship, alongside a Spanish-language verse from Gomez, who previously explored the language on her 2021 project Revelación.
The accompanying music video, directed by Stillz and produced by Estevan Oriol, leans into Chicano cultural imagery, including lowriders and religious iconography, and features cameos from actor Danny Trejo and skateboarder Paul Rodriguez.
