Bonnie Greer, the acclaimed author, playwright and broadcast journalist passed away at the age of 77 after suffering from an unknown illness. Greer’s husband, David Hutchins, announced Greer’s death on Tuesday evening.
He paid her an emotional tribute, saying, “It is with a deep sense of sorrow that I announce the passing of my wife, partner, confidant and source of inspiration Bonnie Greer who sadly died at the age of 77 due to a short illness.”
Greer’s exact cause of illness has yet to be disclosed by her family. Hutchins expressed that Greer was both his “partner” and “confidante” and stated she left behind an indelible mark on British culture and society with her one-of-a-kind voice.
Born in Chicago in 1948, Greer moved to England in 1986 and was awarded British citizenship in 1997.
She gained widespread recognition among British audiences through her numerous television program appearances. In addition to her television career, Greer wrote extensively throughout her lifetime.
The publication of Greer’s first novel Hanging By Her Teeth took place in 1994. She went on to write other works including Obama Music, a biography of poet Langston Hughes and A Parallel Life, which was released as her memoir in 2014.
Outside of writing, Greer sat on the boards of several prominent cultural institutions in Great Britain, including the Royal Opera House, British Museum and London Film School.
For her contributions to the arts, Greer received an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2010. Additionally, in 2022 Greer was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
