Bryan Kohberger asks court to withdraw guilty plea in Idaho student murders—but why now?

The Idaho man, charged with murdering four university students, has asked the court to retract his guilty plea, alleging his attorney influenced his decision.

Bryan Kohberger, 31, submitted the handwritten plea on Monday, July 27, at Ada County District Court.

Kohberger pleaded guilty to the murder of four University of Idaho students last year.

According to the court filings, Idaho claims that he pleaded guilty due to bad legal advice and “false promises,” of getting better prison conditions.

In his latest court filing, Kohberger stated that he had ineffective assistance of counsel during criminal proceedings” and was “convinced to falsely confess.”

Kohberger, who has been serving four consecutive life sentences for the murders of four students who were roommates: Kayleee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, and Madison Mogen in a rented girls’ off-campus house in 2022.

Officials stated that following the arrest, DNA found from a knife sheath left at the crime statistically matched Kohberger.

In July 2025, with his trial weeks away, Kohberger pleaded guilty to all counts, which led to the death penalty being set aside.
