BTS decided to boycott the 2027 Grammys after major changes to the K-pop category.

On Wednesday, July 28, each member of the septet took to their respective Instagram Stories to issue a stern statement regarding their latest decision.

All boy band leader RM, whose real name is Kim Nam-joon, posted a message which read, “We have decided not to enter the Grammys this year.”

He continued, “I hope music itself can be heard and loved rather than being distinguished by region or language.”

“Thank you to the army and everyone for always being with me,” the Swimhitmaker concluded.

The remaining six members, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, J Hope, Suga and V, also shared the exact same message on their own social media accounts.

The announcement comes just a month after the Grammys announced a new category for its 2027: Best Asian Pop Music Performance.

For eligible entries for the category, submissions had to feature songs “performed entirely in an Asian language, while minimal use of Asian languages does not qualify”.

It stated, “Tracks performed fully in English are excluded from this category. Awards will be given to the performing artist(s).

“Recordings must feature meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. An Asian language should play a significant role within the song in bilingual or multilingual structures such that the recording is identifiable with that language.

As an explainer, BTS’s hit Dynamitewas used as an example. Even though the song is by a K-pop group, the song was entirely in English, thus disqualifying it.

The latest album Arirang features mostly English songs with Korean verses included too.
