Canadian politician Bill Oliver caught reading AI prompt in legislative speech

A clip of a Canadian politician has gone viral, in which he can be seen reading an artificial intelligence (AI) prompt aloud during a speech without realising.

Bill Olive, a Progressive Conservative member of the legislative assembly, was addressing a matter related to the office of the New Brunswick Advocate last month when he mistakenly read the whole AI prompt.

After stating, “Public confidence in the office of an advocate matters,” he continued: “Here’s a more natural, flowing version of that section that reads like a legislative speech rather than a series of short points.”

The directive, very similar to a prompt normally issued to a large language model (LLM) in order to improve text, became widely known following the emergence of a video of the event on the Internet recently. It seems that Oliver copy-and-pasted the AI prompt to his speech and forgot to delete it prior to delivering it.

The incident then sparked backlash on social media, with many asking for the resignation of the politician.

Some netizens even compared this to professional malpractice.

This mistake emphasizes the increasing risks associated with the use of AI-generated texts without any regulation. With the increased use of AI tools, the story becomes an example for public figures about the need to check their texts before sharing it with their audiences. The Independent has contacted Mr Oliver for comments.
