China puts robot cops on traffic duty but they can’t arrest anyone: What do they do?

China has launched the world’s first robot traffic officers onto its streets in Hangzhou. The new robot cops use cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor both drivers and pedestrians.

But despite their advanced AI capabilities, they are unable to perform what most humans consider the single most important role of a cop: arresting those who break the law.

Each of the 1.88m tall, 98kg robots was created by the Chinese tech firm SUPCON Information and represents a pilot program aimed at automating many tasks that human traffic police usually perform.

Each machine can recognize if someone is riding an electric bicycle (e-bike) without wearing a helmet, if passengers are riding on the back of an e-bike, or if a vehicle crosses a stop line; if so, each machine provides a warning to the driver for the offense.

In addition to issuing warnings, the machines include multiple cameras, radar and onboard computer systems that enable them to observe their environment and note any infractions.

These same computers also allow them to answer any questions regarding how to get somewhere (directions), where to park and the current traffic laws. An additional feature enables users to contact a human officer via emergency service when necessary.

Each machine has a set of seven joints located within their arm that are pre-programmed to mimic the same hand gestures used by human traffic police and to coordinate with the timing of traffic lights.

However, unlike the armed humanoid cop from the RoboCop movies, these machines lack firearms and therefore do not possess the ability to make arrests. Their primary objective is to prevent violations before they happen and not punish those who commit them afterward.

According to reports from SUPCON, they have deployed 15 robots in Hangzhou since May.

In total, according to SUPCON, their machines have issued more than 170,000 warnings since deployment began.
