OpenAI has introduced “ChatGPT for teens, a special version of the AI chatbot, aiming for users between the ages of 13 and 17.
The launch comes amid global concerns over AI safety and its harmful effects on young users.
The new chatbot automatically activates when the system detects a user is under 18, using more than 2,000 signals including login patterns and account history.
The primary focus of the launch is learning and safety. For learning purposes, ChatGPT for teens adds “Study Mode,” which adopts a Socratic approach by directing students to solve problems themselves rather than providing direct answers.
A new feature named “Study Hours” is also added, enabling teens or parents to set specific times when study mode automatically engages.
The improved version also boasts more visual learning aids for topics ranging from integration to moon phases, numbering over 300.
More protection is included when it comes to safety. The chatbot has added safety measures against conversations related to self-injury, violent behavior, eating disorders, and sexually explicit materials. Measures have been taken by OpenAI to ensure that teens do not personify the AI, and it cannot call itself a friend.
Parents have also provided additional access via linking children’s accounts. If their child engages in any suspicious conversations, including self-harm, parents will receive notifications via text, in-app alerts, and emails.
All flagged content is internally reviewed by OpenAI employees before parents are notified, typically within an hour.
The rollout comes in partnership with CodeAI to promote AI literacy in schools, addressing what the company calls a “gap between use and understanding.” ChatGPT for tens will be available globally over the next two weeks.
