Chris Rock may have skipped college, but he apparently got the Hollywood equivalent — and it came with Adam Sandler, Chris Farley and plenty of McDonald’s runs.
Looking back at his early career in a Varietyinterview, Rock reflected on joining Saturday Night Livein 1990 at 25, years after Eddie Murphy discovered him as a teenager.
For Rock, those SNLyears weren’t just another job. They were his education.
“Chris Farley and me and Adam [Sandler] and David Spade shared an office,” he remembered fondly.
“We would go, ‘Oh, let’s make a McDonald’s run.’ ‘Carolyn Bessette’s here tonight! You gonna talk to her?’ ‘No, you talk to her.’ Then she came in with JFK. ‘Oh, that’s what she’s going for.’ It was a magical time.”
“All you remember are the friendships,” he continued. “I didn’t go to college, but those would have been the years I was in college.”
Rock left SNLin 1993, but his relationship with creator Lorne Michaels clearly stuck.
After appearing in the 2026 documentary Lorne, Rock joked that “it’s the best doc ever where you don’t learn one thing about the guy.”
“The most interesting people in the world — who do not tell you about him. But I met Lorne Michaels and haven’t been broke a day since. That is my guy,” the 61-year-old said.
And here’s the wild part: Rock could have had another iconic sitcom role.
Jason Alexander revealed in February that Rock was among those considered to play George Costanza on Seinfeld.
