Duncan Sheik, the introspective singer-songwriter whose 1996 hit “Barely Breathing” became a Generation X touchstone before he reinvented himself as a Tony-winning Broadway composer, died Thursday, September 17, in Manhattan.
His family revealed he died due to heart failure that led to cardiac arrest. He was 56. His mother, Suzanne Sheik, earlier told The New York Times the cause was cardiac arrest. He is survived by his wife, Nora Ariffin, and their 7-year-old daughter, Ines.
Born Nov. 18, 1969, in Montclair, N.J., Sheik was taught piano by his grandmother, who had trained at the Juilliard School, before switching to guitar. He graduated from Brown University in 1992, where he worked with Lisa Loeb, the future hitmaker, then relocated to Los Angeles with a demo tape and an intense aversion to fame.
His first self-titled album came out in 1996, led by the song “Barely Breathing” – the raw portrait of a failing relationship that became No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and remained there for 55 weeks (at the time, the fourth-longest stay ever). It was nominated for a Grammy and made Sheik an unlikely MTV heartthrob, which he resented.
Tired of pop star life, Sheik turned to musical theatre. He won two Tonys for writing “Spring Awakening,” the revolutionary 2006 rock musical, and also a Grammy.
“Sheik has left us with a singular talent and profoundly influential voice in music and theatre,” his family said in a statement.
