Fiat Panda car crashes into private jet at Milan airport: Watch

A car (a Fiat Panda) collided with a private plane (Hawker Beechcraft 400A) at Milan’s Linate Airport Monday morning; this resulted in a temporary interruption in air traffic at one of Italy’s busier airports.

According to initial reports, the car came to rest against the front portion of the private plane at approximately 11:20 a.m. local time Monday. The private plane (I-AERB) sustained damage around its radar dome and nose section.

Following the accident, emergency personnel arrived to check on the status of the private plane and the car driver, who remained inside his vehicle until the first responders came. Fortunately, no injuries were associated with this incident.

Air traffic operations ceased temporarily for nearly half an hour due to the collision. Because many aircraft are scheduled to land or depart simultaneously from Milan Linate, all but two flights had to divert to other airports.

Two flights, ITA Airways from Rome and KLM, were diverted to Bergamo and Milan-Malpensa respectively. One additional private jet went through a holding pattern and landed eventually.

It remains unclear how the ground service vehicle that hit the private jet lost control. There are early reports indicating possible distractions by the operator or possible medical conditions; however, neither distraction nor medical conditions have been confirmed by officials.

Normal operations resumed at the airport soon after the incident occurred. It is anticipated that further inspections will be conducted on the damaged aircraft prior to determining what structural damage exists.
