FIFA President Gianni Infantino is on the verge of losing his job after a controversial plan to privatise the FIFA World Cup failed and he lost support from major football associations including UEFA.
According to the New York Post, some of the senior officials of the Zurich-based organisation are planning a mutiny against the 56-year-old Swiss football administrator. The allegedly planned project is named “Kill the Monster”
According to four insiders from FIFA, the football governing body officials are angry over being blindsided from secret talks that the president held to sell the World Cup shares to private investors and commercialise the global showdown.
One of the unnamed executives said: “This was a step too far, it’s time to kill the monster.”
It has been revealed that the board will give Infantino to resign voluntarily, otherwise they could hold a no-confidence motion which, according to insiders, “will be embarrassing.”
This comes after FIFA announced that it was dropping the controversial $20 billion spin-off of the global football body’s commercial assets due to sheer resistance from other football associations, including the European football federations.
Prior to FIFA’s announcement, UEFA and its 55 member association made it clear that “world cup is not for sale,” and threatened to boycott the global sport showdown if FIFA moves forward to involve private investors.
Infantino hasn’t yet reacted to the claims made in the report and nor has FIFA announced any official meeting to oust the president via a no-confidence vote.
