Gracie Abrams thought falling in love might silence her songwriting.
Instead, she says Paul Mescal helped her find a whole new voice. The Grammy-nominated singer admitted she initially feared that being happy would drain the emotion from her music, but those worries quickly disappeared.
“I was worried feeling secure and stable was threatening my drive to write music,” she previously shared. “It freaked me out.”
After that quote made headlines, Abrams could not believe the online reaction.
“I’m like, ‘Are we on crack? Like, what the f—?’ ” she joked, adding, “That was my cue to be like, ‘Oh, remember why you don’t look [at social media]?’ Run with it, circus.”
Looking back, Abrams says she simply had not experienced writing from a place of happiness before.
“And I was like, ‘Oh, s–t, how am I going to approach this?’… And it’s had the most amazing effect on my writing,” she explained.
“It has given me the most amount of space to reflect on everything in my life… It is the greatest gift, period.”
The couple’s creativity now spills over at home too. Abrams revealed Mescal even earned a credit on her song Imaginary Friendafter contributing a guitar part.
“We’re a very musical household, and so there’s always something brewing,” she said.
“I feel lucky to be generally inspired by him as a person and by his brain. It’s the easiest thing to make stuff together.”
She also could not hide her admiration for Mescal’s preparation to play Paul McCartney.
“He’s like an alien. I mean, he’s better at guitar backwards than I have been at guitar my whole life.”
Despite opening up about their romance, Abrams says some things will always stay private.
“That is a part of my life that brings me so much peace and joy… it’s not like an open-door policy.”
