A juvenile great white shark was caught on camera launching itself high out of the water near a boogie boarder off Newport Beach, California, on Saturday morning, July 25.

The video showcases a juvenile great white shark launching itself high out of the water near a boogie boarder off Newport Beach, California, on Saturday morning, creating a heart-pounding moment that has gone viral.

Soaren Stevenson told KTLA 5 News that he had been shooting footage of his brother boogie boarding off of Lifeguard Tower 40 when the shark jumped out of the water at roughly 6:30 a.m.

The amazing breaching shark happened right behind the oblivious surfer, who did not seem to know what was going on at all.

The shark, which is estimated to be six feet long, rotated in midair before falling back into the water.

The experts refer to this time as a particularly “sharky summer” across Southern California. The warming of the oceans and the changing patterns of El Niño have resulted in large numbers of young white sharks being attracted to the coastal areas of the beaches.

The warm waters of the coastal areas provide a safe environment for the young sharks as well as a good source of food, such as stingrays, halibut, and bottom fish.

Although the spectacular breaching will certainly cause concern amongst beachgoers, marine biologists point out that breaching by young great whites is very common in coastal shallows and is not usually an aggressive act towards people.
