Gayle King’s memories of Hayden Panettiere’s final months have made the actress’ death even more painful — and sparked an uncomfortable conversation about what happens when someone is visibly struggling.
King recently reflected on her May interview with Panettiere, who was 36 when she died just months later. Looking back, the journalist said the actress was clearly having a difficult time.
“It was hard when she was here that day,” King recalled. “She was still, clearly still struggling.”
The comment has taken on a much heavier meaning following Panettiere’s death.
It also raises a question that is difficult to ignore: if the people around her knew she was struggling, could more have been done while she was still alive?
A source told Rob Shutter, “Saying you knew Hayden was struggling after she died isn’t heroic. The heroic thing would have been picking up the phone, showing up at her door and refusing to let her face it alone.”
Another source added, “We have to stop romanticizing concern after someone dies. If people were worried about Hayden, they had a chance to do something while she was still here.”
Panettiere had been open about difficult chapters in her life, including addiction, postpartum depression, trauma and grief. She also spoke publicly about her experiences while promoting her memoir.
Now, as friends, fans and Hollywood colleagues mourn, attention is turning toward a broader issue: how people respond when someone they care about is struggling.
