King Charles is set to face renewed questions over Britain’s slave-trade history when he begins his Caribbean tour later this month, amid persistent calls for reparations.
In a post on X, Daily Mail royal editor Rebecca English reported that the King is not expected to offer an official apology or financial compensation during the visit, with the Government’s position understood to remain unchanged.
The King and Queen Camilla are due to visit the region later this month, with campaigners continuing to urge Britain to address the lasting consequences of slavery and consider compensation for affected communities.
According to reports, the UK Government’s position on reparations remains unchanged, and the King is not expected to promise financial compensation during the tour.
A Buckingham Palace spokesman has indicated that the visit will not avoid the darkest chapters of Britain’s past.
Royal officials have also pointed to the King’s previous remarks expressing sorrow over the suffering caused by slavery and his efforts to address inequality.
However, the monarch cannot independently change government policy on reparations.
Palace representatives have stressed that he acts on ministerial advice, while government sources have given no indication of a shift towards financial compensation.
The Government has described the transatlantic slave trade as abhorrent.
King Charles is scheduled to visit the Bahamas from October 27 to 29, followed by Guyana from October 29 to 30.
Queen Camilla will then join him in Antigua and Barbuda from November 1 to 4 for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
