King Charles has given a rare insight into his concerns over the escalating US-Iran conflict, with the monarch appearing to express frustration during a private conversation at Clarence House.
The 77-year-old King was welcoming the Pakistan cricket team on Wednesday when he was overheard speaking with Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who has been involved in diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Reflecting on the fragile situation, the King was heard telling Mr Naqvi: “It’s all going backwards.”
The Pakistani minister appeared to agree with the monarch’s assessment, replying: “Yes, it is a story of one step forward and one step back.”
Charles acknowledged Pakistan’s role in diplomatic efforts, telling him, “We’re going to have to rely on you a great deal.”
Mr Naqvi later described the conversation as “very productive”, saying the King recognised Pakistan’s contribution to wider peace and security efforts in the Middle East.
The exchange came as uncertainty continued to surround the future of the US-Iran conflict, with Trump privately considering whether to declare the fighting over.
Speaking to reporters, he highlighted recent military action involving the Strait of Hormuz and claimed Washington had significant visibility into Iran’s activities.
On Truth Social, he said the US position had improved, claiming it had “almost total control” of the strategic waterway while describing Iran’s economy as being under severe pressure.
When questioned about how long the current bombing campaign would continue, Mr Trump offered a brief response: “I don’t think too long.”
