British monarch King Charles might be regretting his reaction to Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer’s claims about him as it has only fueled massive hype for the tell-all memoir that stormed shelves on Tuesday, September 22.
According to a palace insider, “senior royals were not on the same page regarding the move, with some advising to wait until all the details of the book came to light.
“They argued that once you react to one claim, people will expect a response to every claim — and anything not denied will be believed as true, even if it’s completely false.”
Some senior royal commentators and former royal aides have also expressed shock over the monarch’s reaction to the claims, with some calling it an action taken out of frustration.
Meanwhile, a few others supported the monarch, saying it was necessary and within his right to stop the spread of things that are unproven and untrue.
The Palace source claimed: “The British monarch has no intention of responding to any other claims, as he’s focusing on his duties while turning a deaf ear to the allegations.”
Whatever the case, the book has opened a new Pandora’s box and reminded royal fans of Princess Diana’s tragic death and her enduring legacy.
The 77-year-old is accused of insensitively telling Earl Spencer, in the wake of Diana’s death in 1997, that “we’ll forget her soon enough”, according to excerpts in the Daily Mail. But the Palace has pushed back unusually strongly.
“While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss,” it said.
