NASCAR Hall of Famer Kurt Busch opened up about his younger brother’s last moments, NASCAR legend Kyle Busch, who died this year.
The two-time NASCAR champion breathed his last on May 21 after he was hospitalised following a scare incident during simulator training.
The doctors had described Kyle Busch’s condition as a “one-in-a-million” case.
Now, three months into his brother’s sudden death, Kurt has reflected on the painful moments in an interview with Today.
Kurt Busch, 48, spoke at length with host, Craig Melvin on August 21, about how he’s processing the trauma he had been through after Busch, 41 died from acute pneumonia that developed into sepsis.
“There is no book. There is no outline on what we’re supposed to do right now,” Kurt Busch opened up to Craig.
Just weeks before his death, Kyle Busch finished eighth in a NASCAR Cup Series competition in Watkins Glen on May 10, while suffering from a sinus cold.
“The crew chief said that he went into the restroom and that he could hear him coughing very, very abruptly, and that he asked Kyle, like, ‘You all right?’”
Kurt Busch said. “And Kyle says, ‘No.’
“And he’s sitting there just on the floor, back up against the wall. And the crew chief said that he saw blood in the sink. And he goes, ‘You don’t look so good.’ and Kyle said, ‘No.’”
The crew chief called for an ambulance to help Kyle Busch and the family announced his confirmation that he would sit out of his next race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Hours after that announcement, he died.
“I was there at the hospital, all day,” his brother recalled painful times.
“Hoping Ptaying. Hoping for a turnaround.
“It’s just everything had plateaued so fast,” he continued.
“It just escalated so fast. And so I don’t explain it to people, I don’t. what I went through, nobody needs to go through that.”
Kyle Busch on May 15, won a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race in Dover, Delaware.
Days later, he suffered a medical emergency while practising in a racing simulator.
Kyle Busch celebrated his son’s 11th birthday just days before he passed away.
The racing G.O.A.T. is survived by his wife Samantha Busch and two children—Brexton Locke and Lennix Key.
