In America, Labour Day is celebrated each year on the first Monday of September. This year, it falls on Monday, September 7, 2026, bringing major closures to government offices and financial institutions, though most major retailers and eateries will remain open.
In observance of the federal holiday, all federal, state, and local government offices will remain closed, including courts and DMVs. Moreover, public institutions, such as public schools and universities, as well as public libraries, will remain closed for business hours.
As far as financial services are concerned, all physical banks will be closed, but the NYSE and Nasdaq will halt their trading for the day. However, the services of ATMs and mobile banking applications will be available.
Delivery services like the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will not be available, meaning there will be no delivery of the regular mail. In turn, FedEx and UPS will be operating their express delivery services.
Major retail chains, including Walmart and Target, will operate in their usual hours, and popular grocers stores such as Kroger, Trader Joe’s, and Aldi will remain open. Costco warehouses, however, will remain closed.
Restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues are expected to stay open, though hours may vary by location.
Most importantly, all essential emergency services, including police, fire, and medical facilities, will remain fully operational to ensure public safety throughout the day.
