Meryl Streep knew The Devil Wears Prada 2 would be a hit so she took a risk.
The Devil Wears Pradastar rejected the first offer to reprise her role Miranda Priestly in the sequel before agreeing to return to the popular franchise.
In an interview, the Oscar-winning actress revealed that she immediately recognised the sequel’s potential after reading the script.
“I knew it was going to be a hit. It’s the first time in my entire life… I read the script and thought, ‘Hmm, it’s a great script,” she told the interviewer alongside her co-stars Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt.
However, when the studio made its initial offer, she decided to test just how much value she could command as she recalled, “They called me up and made an offer, and I said no. I’m not going to do it.”
The 56-year-old veteran artist’s next move was even bolder. Rather than simply negotiating for a modest increase, she decided to double her asking price “…and they went right away and said, ‘Sure.’”
For Streep, the moment became about more than the salary itself. It was a realization about her own worth, one she said took decades to reach.
She emphasised that it’s all about being sure about something and knowing your worth, stating, “I was sure it was going to be hit and they needed me I felt.”
Streep had spent decades building one of Hollywood’s most celebrated careers, yet she says it was only at 56 that she truly understood she could make that kind of demand and have it accepted.
