A teenager from North Carolina is critically ill with a rare infection, called “amoeba,” found in warm fresh water.
According to the state health officials, who provided an update on Thursday, August 27, the teen has an infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, a microscopic organism.
Amoeba infection, stemming from a water-borne organism, carried the potential of damaging the brain.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services did not provide more information as to where the teen contracted the brain-eating infection, amoeba.
Naegleria fowleri can be contracted by anyone who swims in warm lakes, rivers ponds.
The state health officials have not released the identity of the teen to protect the family’s privacy.
“Our hearts go out to this teen’s family, friends and loved ones as they navigate this difficult time,” said State Epidemiologist Dr. Zack Moore.
Moore also warned that the infections are extremely rare but serve as a caution that the amoeba is found in North Carolina and elsewhere in the United States
What are the common symptoms of amoeba infection?
The infection, known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis, or PAM, can trigger chronic headache, fever nausea and vomiting.
These symptoms may rapidly advance to a stiff neck, seizures, and coma.
The ideal conditions for amoeba infection are warm waters and can survive at temperatures as high as 115 degrees.
The disease progresses quickly and typically leads to death within five days of symptom onset.
In the United States, fewer than 10 cases are typically reported each year.
