Nicolas Cage has entered the Marveldebate—and he didn’t exactly pull his punches.
During a Fan Expo Dallas panel in September, the 62-year-old actor offered a blunt take on the current state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comparing its superhero spectacle to professional wrestling.
“I do say this with love,” Cage said, per The Playlist.
“When I see these 50-plus and otherwise intelligent and remarkably gifted thespians putting on these ridiculous outfits and getting ready for the fight — let’s face it, it’s all cutting to the fight — it’s hard for me not to be reminded that the MCU is becoming a well-funded and glorified WWE.”
The timing is certainly interesting. Cage’s own superhero series, Spider-Noir, was canceled after one season despite positive fan response.
The Prime Video series wasn’t part of the MCU, but Cage knows Marvelwell, having played Ghost Rider in 2007’s Ghost Rider and its 2012 sequel.
Now, Ghost Rider is heading into the MCUwith Ryan Gosling taking over the role. Gosling was officially announced as Johnny Blaze at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
Cage had a very different approach to his time as Spider-Man’sworld’s noir detective.
Speaking previously to People magazine, he said he wanted to combine classic stars like James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart with Stan Lee’s Spider-Man.
“I don’t have any crazy stories,” Cage said of the physical training.
“I did a lot of wirework, which is understandable since this character is flying around quite a bit on webs. I always get a kick out of that.”
For Cage, it seems the superhero suit was never really the main attraction. The performance was.
