Royal commentator Omid Scobie has finally broken his silence on the never-ending war between King Charles and Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer.
Scobie, who is known to be close to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, says this Charles vs Charles clash has given a new energy to the UK press.
It all started when Earl Spencer made a bombshell claim in his upcoming book. He alleged that days after Diana’s death in 1997, then-Prince Charles told him “rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough” and had sounded “giddily elated — like a lottery winner” on an earlier phone call.
Buckingham Palace was quick to hit back, issuing a statement that grief can cloud memory and question Spencer’s recollection.
According to Scobie, response is very interesting because it’s not actually a denial, adding: “It doesn’t say Charles never said those words. Instead it attempts to cast doubt on Spencer’s ability to remember them accurately,”
He called out the media, argueing: “Spencer’s recollection is treated as potentially unreliable because he was grieving; Charles’s, apparently, requires no such caveat.”
Scobie also revealed that those who know Spencer describe him as a meticulous note-taker and journal keeper, and many stories from his book were told to close friends and family years ago.
He even pointed to Daily Mail veteran Richard Kay, one of the few journalists genuinely close to Diana, who said he spoke to Spencer straight after Diana’s death and “what he said then about his row with Charles chimes with his damning memoir.
Scobie then slammed the press for suddenly becoming concerned about Diana’s privacy, when it was the same media that chased her for years.
He questioned why Spencer’s motives — book sales, bitterness — are being investigated so feverishly, when authors who write pro-Palace books never face the same scrutiny.
“By this point, the lengths people are going to defend the monarchy are becoming almost more interesting than the allegations themselves,” Scobie wrote.
He went on to ask questions by claiming that Charles Spencer should not get a free pass because he was Diana’s brother.
But King Charles should not get one either, just because journalists like him and want to keep good relations with the Palace.
The only standard, Scobie says, should be: “What can actually be supported by evidence?”
